This is the story behind Batman: Arkham Asylum, a game in which we take on the role of Batman and must fight all the criminals that we had locked up in their day that are now spreading panic in the city, under orders of The Joker. Following the arrival at the hospital of The Joker, Batman's arch-enemy, all the inmates rebel unleashing chaos and causing a huge problem. Obviously the same flaws remain (why cant you get in the Batmobile? WHY?) but it's worth it for the atmospheric visuals alone. All the maniacs, criminals and delinquents of Gotham City are sent to the Arkham psychiatric hospital where they are isolated from society. I've always thought the title deserved a little more love than it currently gets, but if you have it in your back catalogue, try it with the new Rift. The suit up section (one of my favourite moments in gaming ever) still manages to produce tingles, and the section where you are playing back the fight scene in the alley would have blown our tiny fragile little minds five years ago. Everything is pin sharp, the level of detail is immense, and in the scenes where you're standing in, and above, Gotham, are just brilliant. I popped back in there last night on my Rift S and have to say, with the updated visuals, I dont think there is a better looking VR game currently on the market. I know there's an ongoing argument as to whether this actually constitutes a game due to its length, but I have loved the world Rocksteady created across its three PC games, and to actually be standing in it when I first got my CV1 was pretty mind blowing. One of the pleasures of getting the new Rift is going back to older games to view them with the updated clarity, and oh man, does Batman Arkham VR look amazing.
